Do Design Trends Really Matter?
Trends can be inspiring — they’re a reflection of what’s happening in culture, architecture, fashion, and art. They give us new ideas for colors, materials, textures, and layouts that can feel fresh and exciting. But trends are just that — trends. They come, they go, and if you build your home entirely around them, you risk ending up with a space that feels dated or disconnected from your life in a few years.
Here’s how I think about trends in my work at Designs Daly:
1. Trends Are Tools, Not Rules
I never design a home based solely on what’s “in.” Instead, I look at trends as inspiration — like a color palette or a unique material — and then translate that into something that works for your lifestyle, personality, and the story of your space. A well-chosen trend can elevate a room without ever feeling forced.
2. Timeless Design Comes First
I always prioritize what will last: natural textures, high-quality materials, thoughtful layouts, and classic design principles. These are the bones of a home. Trends are like accessories — they can enhance and add excitement, but they shouldn’t define the entire space.
3. Personal Style Always Wins
Your home should reflect you, not Instagram or Pinterest. I spend time getting to know my clients — how they live, what makes them feel calm, energized, or inspired — so the choices we make support their life, not just the “look of the moment.” That’s why every space I create is modern organic at its core, layered with personal touches and, yes, a hint of glam when it feels right.
4. Trends Can Be Fun — When Used Wisely
I love using trends sparingly: a bold paint color on a single wall, a patterned tile in the kitchen, or a statement light fixture. These small updates give a space energy and personality, without compromising the long-term design integrity.
5. The Real Measure of Design
The question isn’t “What’s trendy?” — it’s “Does it feel right for you?” If a trend doesn’t make your daily life better, it’s not worth it. Great design isn’t about chasing what’s popular; it’s about creating a space that supports how you live, brings joy, and tells your story.
So, do trends really matter? Only as much as they serve you and your space. Use them thoughtfully, layer them over timeless design principles, and your home will stay beautiful and functional long after the trend has passed.
At the end of the day, design should make life easier, more joyful, and more reflective of who you are. That’s what I aim to do for every client at Designs Daly — and yes, trends can play a role, but they’re never the main story.
