Simple & Safe Interior Design Tips for your Home
Even though I work as a professional interior designer, I know not everyone is ready for a full renovation — and that’s okay! There are simple, safe ways you can refresh your home and make it feel more intentional and personal. These are small changes inspired by the principles I use in my own projects — little touches that can make a big difference without needing a contractor or special tools.
1. Rearrange Your Furniture
Sometimes all it takes is moving things around. Shifting furniture can improve flow, open up a room, or create cozy conversation areas.
My tip: Keep heavy pieces on the floor and don’t move large furniture alone — safety first!
2. Play with Lighting
Lighting completely changes how a space feels. Swapping lampshades or bulbs for warmer tones can make your room feel cozier. I also love adding subtle string lights or LED strips — instant ambiance, no electrician needed.
3. Bring in Plants (Real or Faux)
Plants are one of my favorite ways to add life and texture. If keeping them alive feels intimidating, high-quality faux plants still bring color and dimension to a room.
4. Refresh with Textiles
Cushions, throws, and rugs are my go-to for adding pattern, softness, and color. They’re low-risk, budget-friendly, and easy to switch out when you want a new look.
5. Curate Wall Art & Décor
Even simple changes — lightweight art, photos, or posters hung with removable hooks — make a room feel intentional. Rotating pieces seasonally or when inspiration strikes keeps your space feeling fresh.
6. Declutter & Organize
I always tell my clients: a tidy space is the foundation of good design. Stylish baskets, shelves, and storage boxes make organizing functional and beautiful.
7. Try Temporary Updates
Peel-and-stick wallpaper, wall decals, or removable tiles are perfect for renters or anyone hesitant about permanent changes. They’re quick, easy, and make a big visual impact.
8. Add Pops of Color
You don’t have to repaint walls to bring color in. I love layering it in with pillows, vases, candles, or other accessories — a small change that instantly lifts the room.
